Two Things

Thing One
I may have mentioned this before, but pencil cap erasers have been a lifesaver in my room.  I thought I had posted about this before, but I couldn't find it.  If I did, forgive the repeat.  As teachers, we have to pick and choose our battles.  I have given up on pencils and erasers.  I just keep a supply for my friends.  Here is my container for pencil cap erasers.
I got it in a dollar store.  Notice the sign?
We have a big talk about needs vs. wants!  I buy a box of 500 eraser caps at the start of each year with my school supply order.  They are actually fairly inexpensive.  It will generally last nine out of the ten months we are in school.  The last month they are on their own!  I just found it so much easier to have these available than having my friends wasting time searching for an eraser or borrowing from a neighbor.  Actually, it is more like the OCD in me was getting crazy over the messy papers I was getting.  When I would ask why they didn't just erase, the answer was always, "I didn't have an eraser."  No excuses now!

Thing Two
Are your friends caught up in the patterned duct tape frenzy?

The girls in my room have made duct tape bows, necklaces, bracelets, and any other thing they can attach to themselves.  The boys have made wallets and toys that I have had to confiscate more than once!  I have been the recipient of many duct tape flower pens this year.  Here are the four most recent:

They are having a lot of fun with this stuff.  It got me thinking to what I could use it for.  It would be great for book binding when your friends make books.  It would also be neat to cover a clipboard with.  Have you used this stuff for anything?  Any ideas?

  1. Good idea with the erasers!

The duct tape I've used for wrapping around plastic. It would be good for a clipboard makeover. I've seen wallets and purses made out of it too.

  2. My mom was a high school principal at a technical school. She had two kids make their prom attire completely from duct tape. Apparently they were in the running for a scholarship and it was a requirement! Still cracks my up.

    1. Wow! I did see a girl on the news that made her prom dress out of gum wrappers. I'm thinking the duct tape was probably a bit more durable, but still very funny!

  4. Hi I'm a new follower of your blog and love it! I think the erasers are a great idea - we have the same problem in my classroom :/
Also, I've used the zebra print duct tape for my truffula tree trunks on my Dr. Seuss bulletin board display. I love how they came out and the duct tape is so cheap ($1 bin at Michael's Crafts!) that I will probably be looking for more ways to use it - even if it's just to spruce up my anchor charts :)
    Thanks for the post!

  6. Oh the duct tape frenzy! (sheesh) I am the proud owner of 3 duct tape wallets, two flowers, one robot (that is my theme this year) and a very decrepit object which I am still not sure about... 4th grade frolics has a creative way of using it for her center word work organization. Check it out http://4thgradefrolics.blogspot.com/2011/09/word-work-part-2-and-freebie.html - I used it as well and they turned out great!

  8. Hi Nancy:
I loved your comment on my blog today!
If you give me your address, I will send you Oreos...
(How many boxes can I put you down for??)

    Ahhhh.... eraser caps.
The favorite projectile of eleven year olds.
Before I retire, I want to figure out how they can make them disintegrate into particles that resemble pink fuzzy sand.
It's funny: I rarely see them erase anything... yet I am constantly finding eraser remnants all over the floor!

    Thanks for stopping by!

  9. Hi there,
I'm new to this site and LOVE what I am seeing. I know this is off topic, but I didn't see a "contact me" space and wanted to ask a questions.

I was hoping to follow your blog, but only have the ability to follow via email. Is is possible to make this available as an option? I get my other blog posts emailed daily as it's an option on the home page. I think they use feedburner...

Hope this makes sense and thanks. Sorry to hijack your post!
    Warmly,
    Mindy :)

    1. Sorry, Des! I would if I could, but I didn't save it. It was a quick print. I Googled "eraser cap" images and copied a couple of pics into a word document. Then, I just typed the saying. I did a quick print and taped it to the jar. Now you have me wishing I had saved it! However, I think you could whip up one pretty quick too!

  12. I used duct tape to section my circle time rug off so each child would have their own space. Also trimmed pocket charts with it for decoration. Taped on boxes and containers. I used the Zebra stripe.
